Shadowing Without the Travel

A hospital placement asks a lot of a student: transport, a free afternoon, a host site within reach. Plenty of students who would thrive in health care cannot meet those conditions, and that has nothing to do with their ability.

This program removes them. It is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, and it runs entirely online — an exploration of health careers a student can do from a school library or a kitchen table.

What Participants Do

  • Learn about a wide range of health professions — the education and skills each one requires, what it pays, and which colleges and universities offer the relevant programs.
  • Complete online assessments that identify the careers matching their own interests, rather than the ones they happen to have heard of.
  • Work through lessons built to develop and support that career exploration.

Finish It, and the Test Prep Is Yours

Students who complete the program and all its required lessons receive their choice of a 365-day fully virtual ACT or SAT preparation course from The Princeton Review — a $299 value, at no cost to the student.

For a rural student weighing whether college is realistic, that is not a token. It is the same preparation their better-resourced peers pay for.

Who Can Apply

Fifty places each cohort, open to students in the 23 counties Northern WV AHEC serves.

Applications for this year’s cohort open in October 2026. The online program runs from November through March.

Students must be in grades 10–12 at a high school in one of these counties:
