Why the Geography Matters

West Virginia’s five AHECs cover 50 of the state’s 55 counties between them. The counties in our region range from the industrial Northern Panhandle to some of the most sparsely populated country in the eastern United States, and the distance between a patient and a provider is frequently the deciding factor in whether care happens at all.

Programs are designed around that: training placed inside small communities rather than only in teaching hospitals, and recruitment that starts with students who are already from the region and have reason to return to it.
